Our Water Feature Installation Services
We build several types of water features, all designed for long-term reliability with minimal maintenance:
- Pondless waterfalls — the most popular choice in San Diego. A recirculating waterfall that cascades over natural stone into a hidden underground reservoir. No open pond means no mosquitoes, no drowning hazard, and no algae management.
- Natural stream channels — a meandering stream that connects two or more water features, or leads from a waterfall to a rock garden.
- Water walls — contemporary stainless or natural stone walls with a sheet of water flowing down the face. Excellent for privacy screening as the sound masks road noise and neighbor noise.
- Decorative bubblers — smaller rock or urn bubblers set within a patio or planting area. Adds movement and sound without the space requirement of a full waterfall.
- Pond installation — we install Aquascape-system koi ponds for clients who want a full pond ecosystem. Requires more maintenance than pondless systems.
- Water feature repair and conversion — convert existing ponds to pondless systems, repair pump and plumbing failures, reline cracked pond shells
San Diego Hardscape Water Feature Company
San Diego’s dry climate makes moving water feel especially restorative. But that same climate — specifically, water evaporation and mineral content — creates maintenance challenges that cheap water features don’t handle well.
Our water feature installations are built with:
- Commercial-grade Aquascape pumps — designed for continuous operation. Not the pump from the hardware store.
- EPDM rubber liner (60 mil) with underlayment fabric — puncture-resistant, UV stable, 20+ year lifespan
- Auto-fill valves — automatically top off the water level lost to evaporation. No manual refilling.
- Integrated LED lighting — underwater and edge lighting for evening ambiance, waterproof and low-voltage
- Biological filtration — for any system with fish, including koi ponds
We are a certified Aquascape contractor and attend annual training on water feature design and installation.
Water Feature Design for San Diego Yards
Matching Your Landscape Style
San Diego backyards run the spectrum from formal Spanish Colonial to contemporary minimalist to naturalistic California native gardens. We design water features that fit the landscape character:
- Naturalistic pondless waterfall — stacked slate or fieldstone, surrounded by California native ferns, Japanese maples, river rock
- Contemporary water wall — stainless steel or concrete panel, clean lines, minimal planting
- Zen garden bubbler — granite sphere or natural boulder with water emerging from the top, surrounded by raked DG or moss
- Formal fountain — symmetrical basin with central spout, appropriate for Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean-style homes
Size and Placement
Water features need proximity to a GFCI electrical outlet (for the pump) and a water supply line for auto-fill. Most residential systems use 1.5” or 2” PVC for supply and return. We locate all utilities before designing the water feature placement.
Areas We Serve for Water Feature Installation
Water features are popular throughout San Diego County. We work frequently in Encinitas, La Jolla, Del Mar, Carmel Valley, and Escondido — areas with larger lots and mature landscaping that welcome a naturalistic water element.
Frequently Asked Questions — Water Features San Diego
How much do water features cost in San Diego? A mid-size pondless waterfall (8 ft tall, 12 ft wide cascade) with professional installation typically costs $8,000 to $15,000 including pump, liner, stones, LED lighting, and auto-fill. Smaller bubblers start at $2,500. Large naturalistic stream systems can exceed $30,000.
Do water features waste water in a drought? Recirculating systems use very little water — only what is lost to evaporation, typically 1-3 gallons per day in San Diego’s climate. That is comparable to a small potted plant. Auto-fill valves prevent waste by filling only when needed.
How much maintenance does a pondless waterfall need? Minimal. Clean the pump filter basket every 1-3 months, check auto-fill monthly, inspect annually. No algae management (no open water surface). Compare to a pond, which requires weekly algae treatment, filter cleaning, and water testing.
Can I add a water feature to an existing patio? Yes. We saw-cut the existing patio for the underground basin and electrical conduit, then overlay the cut area with decorative stone. The installation is minimally invasive to the surrounding patio surface.
What happens to the water feature in winter? San Diego winters rarely freeze. Most water features run year-round. On the rare freeze nights, the recirculating water keeps the system from freezing. We have never had a freeze-related failure in San Diego.
